Jockey Club funds redevelopment of Yan Chai Hospital

03/12/2015

To meet the ever rising demand for medical services in the Tsuen Wan and Kwai Tsing districts, The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust has donated HK$84 million to Yan Chai Hospital to redevelop four hospital blocks into an 12-storey health centre (including basement) and other supporting facilities to improve medical services and the hospital environment.

Today (12 March), the Club’s Executive Director, Charities and Community, Leong Cheung joined Secretary for Food and Health Dr Ko Wing-man, and Chairlady of Yan Chai Hospital Board Susan So to officiate at the opening ceremony ofthe new centre.

Mr Cheung said the new centre demonstrated Yan Chai Hospital’s ongoing commitment to enhance its services. “With the districts’ rapid increase in  population, we hope this comprehensive establishment can provide better medical services to over 300,000 people each year, improving the overall well-being of the community. We will continue to support the development of Hong Kong’s medical services to benefit more people.” He noted that in the coming three to five years, the Club would strategically focus on helping build Hong Kong into an age-friendly city; channelling youth energy into social innovation; and supporting sports projects that can create lifelong positive values and hopes.

The new centreprovides a wide range of integrated medical services under one roof.  Key facilities under the Jockey Club umbrella are Health Resources Centre; Multi-rehabilitation Services; Community Nursing Service; General Practice Clinic and Family Medicine Specialist Clinic; Medical, Surgical, Orthopaedics and Traumatology, Gynaecology and Ophthalmology Specialist Outpatient Clinics, as well as Paediatrics and Adolescent Ambulatory Centre. The centre is expected to particularly benefit elderly and low-income families in the district.

The Club’s long-standing support for the development of medical and health services dates back to the 1950s, with over HK$7.5 billion donated to various medical and health projects in Hong Kong. In addition to this new centre, the Club has funded The Chinese University of Hong Kong to establish a teaching hospital that will provide high-quality and affordable fixed-price medical services for sandwich-class patients; the establishment of the HKJC Disaster Preparedness and Response Institute to develop local leaders in the field of disaster preparedness and response; the establishment of the HKJC Innovative Learning Centre for Medicine; and various other enhancement projects by Yan Chai Hospital, as well as the Moral and Civic Education Award Scheme in 2013.
