Jockey Club helps bring largest Tsarist exhibition to Hong Kong

10/28/2014

Over 200 exquisite items from the Russian emperors’ palace Tsarskoye Selo are on display at the Hong Kong Museum of History from tomorrow until 16 March 2015, funded by an HK$8.5 million donation from The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust. The exhibits of The Hong Kong Jockey Club Series: Treasures from Tsarskoye Selo, Residence of the Russian Monarchs are on loan from the Tsarskoye Selo State Museum-Preserve of Russia, the majority of which are being displayed outside Russia for the first time.

Today (28 October), Club Deputy Chairman Anthony W K Chow joined Secretary for Home Affairs Tsang Tak-sing; Consul-General of the Russian Federation in Hong Kong and Macao Vladimir Kalinin; Director of The Tsarskoye Selo State Museum-Preserve, Russia, Olga Taratynova; Chairman of History Museum Advisory Panel Stanley Wong; Director of Leisure and Cultural Services Michelle Li; and Museum Director of Hong Kong Museum of History Susanna Siu to officiate at the opening ceremony.

Mr Chow noted the Club had long been a supporter of arts and cultural development across the city, and it was a true privilege for the Club to be the sole sponsor of the exhibition.  “In line with our usual practice, we are also supporting a series of education and outreach programmes to enable the community, particularly our younger generation, to be exposed to and be inspired by these great works. Additionally, the Museum will conduct special guided tours and workshops for the elderly and Alzheimer patients, as well as people with hearing or visual impairments,” he said.
The five-month exhibition will showcase more than 200 invaluable artefacts of Russian Emperors and Empresses, including the richly-decorated carriage with harnesses used for the coronation of Emperor Alexander II in Moscow, and a Guangdong lacquer vase presented to the last Russian Emperor Nicholas II in the name of the last emperor of China Puyi.

And to enhance the visitors’ experience, the Hong Kong Philharmonic will perform three concerts of Russian music at the museum during the exhibition period. Moreover, all local schools can apply for the Trust-funded transport subsidy scheme, to allow more students, especially those living in remote areas, to enjoy the exhibition. The Hong Kong Jockey Club Series is a three-year partnership between the Club’s Charities Trust and the LCSD launched in 2012/2013 to support two to three exhibitions each year, with an annual funding of HK$17 million. The exhibitions are complemented with educational programmes. A previous Series hit was the Legends of the Giant Dinosaursexhibition, which attracted a record-breaking 770,000 visitors over five months. The next one is the Dunhuang: Untold Tales, Untold Riches to be held in the Hong Kong Heritage Museum from 28 November to 16 March 2015.
