Jockey Club campus to house HKCT Groupa£į?s first-ever undergraduate programme

HKCT Institute of Higher Education, newly established by HKCT Group, is set to launch its first-ever degree programme in October with the help of a HK$44.8 million donation from The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust, mainly for the conversion work of its new campus.

Today (27 August), the Club’s Executive Director, Charities, Douglas So joined Under Secretary for Education Kevin Yeung, Sha Tin District Officer Cora Ho, Sha Tin District Council Chairman Ho Hau-cheung, HKCT Group Chairman Dr Wong King-keung, Hong Kong College of Technology Chairman-cum-HKCT Institute of Higher Education Council Chairman Dr Lau Pui-king,Principal Dr Chan Cheuk-hay and other guests to officiate at the HKCT Jockey Club Undergraduate Campus groundbreaking-cum-naming ceremony.

Mr So said, “The Club is very pleased to support the conversion work of the HKCT Jockey Club Undergraduate Campus, which can provide a better learning environment for more than 1,000 students. With the belief that software is equally important, the Club is also supporting the launch of the three-year HKCT Jockey Club Service Learning Project.”

The six-storey new campus, a three-minute walk from the existing HKCT Jockey Club Ma On Shan Campus in Yiu On Estate, is scheduled to open in September next year mainly for the use of students of sub-degree programmes and the bachelor degree programme of social sciences (hons) in social development studies. With a construction floor area of around 8,000 square metres, the new campus, converted from a former primary school, has such facilities as a digital media studio, a Cisco laboratory and an art studio, and will be able to accommodate about 1,000 students when opened.

Apart from the conversion work, the Trust is also supporting the launch of the HKCT Jockey Club Service Learning Project, which is to equip students with the knowledge and skills to serve the community in their profession. For instance, they may have the chance to research into social problems and make recommendations. More than 2,100 students are expected to participate, reaching out to 12,000 people under the project.

The Jockey Club has always been supportive of local education development, with total donations amounting to over HK$3 billion over the past decade. Since 2010, the Trust has contributed over HK$53 million to support various HKCT Group’s projects, including the establishment of the HKCT Jockey Club Ma On Shan Campusand the implementation of the Project on Work-Integrated Learning for Sub-degree Students.
