Jockey Club helps upgrade rehab facilities for disabled

03/28/2014

Facilities at the rehab SAHK LOHAS Garden have been upgraded with over HK$10 million funding from the Jockey Club’s Charities Trust, enhancing the centre’s rehabilitation and vocational training services, and promoting social inclusion through planting at its rooftop SAHK Jockey Club Garden.  Today (28 March), the modernised centre was opened by Club Steward Anthony W K Chow, Secretary for Labour and Welfare Matthew Cheung and SAHK Chairman Professor Leung Nai Kong.

Speaking at the ceremony, Mr Chow said the Club was delighted to help upgrade the facilities at SAHK LOHAS Garden, particularly the roof garden.  With the installation of kitchen waste decomposition facilities and other environmentally-friendly elements, the SAHK Jockey Club Garden not only helps create a green rooftop but also provides occupational training and horticultural therapy to the disabled.

Located in Ho Man Tin, SAHK LOHAS Garden is an integrated rehabilitation service centre, providing 250 places for day rehabilitation services and 189 residential places.  The Trust’s donation covered the purchase of equipment for the occupational rehabilitation centre; the renovation of the multi-purpose hall and open ground; and the provision of new facilities including fitness equipment, multi-sensory path, healthcare services, and musical instruments.  These not only help expand the variety of vocational training for the disabled, but also enhance their daily living and learning environment.  In addition, the centre will organise inclusion programmes with able-bodied participants to promote social inclusion in the community.

The Club has been supporting SAHK since 1968, with donations amounting to $215 million.  Major projects include establishing the Jockey Club New Page Inn, the city’s first transitional care and support centre for tetraplegic patients, upgrading facilities and equipment at Jockey Club Elaine Field School, and launching the “Hong Kong Jockey Club Community Project Grant: Comprehensive Rehabilitation Seating Service”.
