Jockey Club funds college hostels to enrich students' hall life

03/28/2014

The Hong Kong Jockey Club is helping the Hang Seng Management College (HSMC) expand its campus by funding construction of student hostel, tentatively named HSMC Jockey Club Student Residence Halls with HK$200 million donation, which will enable 1,200 undergraduate students per year to enjoy at least one year of hall life.  The three-building complex is expected to be completed next year. This is the first time the Club’s Charities Trust extends support for tertiary education to a privately-funded institution.

Today (28 March), Club Steward Philip N L Chen joined HSMC Board Chairman Rose Lee, President Professor Simon Ho and Steering Committee Chairman Martin Tam to perform the groundbreaking ceremony of the Residence Halls.

Mr Chen said it was a historic occasion for the Jockey Club to work with the esteemed Hang Seng Management College for the first time. “We are very delighted to have the opportunity to support this $200 million project, providing facilities and accommodation for 1,200 undergraduates each year.”

HSMC Board Chairman Rose Lee expressed gratitude to the Trust for its generous donation to build the Student Residence Halls, which helps to provide students with rich and well-rounded tertiary education experience.

Located in Siu Lek Yuen, the Student Residence Halls comprises three 7 to 11-storey buildings on a 7,700-square-metre site.  The halls will provide various support facilities, including common rooms, quiet study rooms, communal halls and an outdoor court for sports activities.  The design of the halls has also incorporated ideas from students and staff members through mock-up room visits and survey, as well as some green features, such as effective natural ventilation and green roof system.

In addition, the HSMC will introduce community service initiatives as part of hall life education.  This will not only enrich students’ hall life with out-of-classroom learning experiences, but also benefit the underprivileged communities in the neighbourhood.

The Jockey Club has always given high priority to supporting the development of higher education. Apart from the annual provision of Jockey Club Scholarship to 36 tertiary students to cover their four years of academic and living expenses, the Club’s recent donations to this sector include the provision of some 19,000 hostel places at the eight UGC-funded tertiary institutions; construction of the Jockey Club Tower on the Centennial Campus at Hong Kong University; construction of the Jockey Club Innovation Tower and setting up the Jockey Club Design Institute for Social Innovation at Polytechnic University; and establishing the Jockey Club Campus and launching the Jockey Club Community Healthcare Education Programme at the Open University.
