The Hong Kong Jockey Club Community Partners Network launched to strengthen Club's ties with 18 Districts

03/23/2014

At the race meeting today (23 March) featuring the 18 Districts Cup, The Hong Kong Jockey Club announced the formation of a new initiative called the Hong Kong Jockey Club Community Partners Network, which will further strengthen the Club's ties with district organisations. This will allow more effective district projects to be launched in such sectors as sports, arts and culture, youth and social services that can contribute to the betterment of Hong Kong.

The Club has staged the 18 Districts Cup since 2008 to showcase the contributions made by District Councils to community development and pay tribute to the Club’s community partners. Secretary for Home Affairs Tsang Tak-sing was Guest of Honour at today’s event, inaugurating the HKJC Community Partners Network in front of about 300 community leaders, including Legislative Councilors, Chairmen and Vice-Chairmen of the District Councils, and representatives of the Club’s community partner organisations. All the guests were thrilled by the sporting excitement at Sha Tin Racecourse.

Club Chairman T. Brian Stevenson told the guests that the Club and its community partners from the 18 Districts had collaborated closely on the smooth launch of the Club’s charitable projects across different districts to benefit the community. Building on well-established connections between the Club and its district partners, the new HKJC Community Partners Network would strengthen the Club’s community partnerships further, he remarked. “This involves creating a strategic network of trusted partner organisations in different sectors with whom we can deliver the Club’s community projects more effectively, efficiently and with greater cross-sector synergy.”

Commenting on the HKJC Community Partners Network, Secretary for Home Affairs Tsang Tak-sing expressed high praise for the Club’s efforts in making The Hong Kong Jockey Club a successful brand for not only promoting its excellent reputation abroad but also providing better services to the public domestically.  Mr Tsang said he was confident the HKJC Community Partners Network could supplement and support the District Councils’ projects. “It is hoped the Club strengthens its communication with District Councils, and to work hand-in-hand to generate benefits to the general public” he remarked.

The HKJC Community Partners Network will initially cover eight social sectors, namely sports, arts and culture, education, youth, women’s affairs, social services, rural affairs and environmental protection. Under the Network, the Club will collaborate with various community organisations in these sectors. The Club’s CARE Volunteer Team will also be actively involved in delivering the services alongside the partner organisations. For example, earlier this month it joined hands with the Heung Yee Kuk to launch an Elderly Visit Programme in Rural Villages, under which the Club’s CARE volunteers team up with volunteers from the Heung Yee Kuk for visits to the elderly in over 700 rural villages in the New Territories to show their love and care.

Other notable initiatives include the launch of outreach programmes for over 400 educational institutions to promote waste reduction at source, and the provision of free Chinese drum lessons for students from low-income families in Tung Chung and Tin Shui Wai.

Today’s raceday saw more than 22,000 local residents and visitors turning out to support the sport of horse racing.  Sugar trained by Andreas Schutz won the 18 Districts Cup.
