Jockey Cluba£į?s annual green drive culminates in first Green Movie Night

03/15/2014

Echoing its commitment to promoting sustainable development, The Hong Kong Jockey Club organised a Green Movie Night today (15 March).  One of the Club’s numerous initiatives to encourage its staff to help build a greener Hong Kong, the event included the first-ever movie shows on the giant Diamond Vision screen at Happy Valley Racecourse, attracting some 2,000 Club employees, families and friends as well as members of the public.

The Green Movie Night was the closing highlight of the Club's Green Action Programme, which has been organised annually for the past four years to promote a green lifestyle among its 24,000-plus strong workforce.  A number of green groups and community organisations also joined the event to support the Club’s initiative and share green information with participants.

Chief Executive Officer Winfried Engelbrecht-Bresges said that as one of Hong Kong’s largest employers with a workforce of some 24,000, the Club was always conscious that it should set a good example. “We have set up policies and programmes to embed sustainability in our culture and major processes for years,” he told guests at the opening ceremony.

Through this comprehensive environmental policy and the efforts of Club staff, a 23% reduction has been seen in the Club’s carbon intensity from four years earlier.

The Club has also been a strong supporter of environmental projects in the community through its Charities Trust donations.  Since 1984, its total donations in this area have exceeded HK$778 million.  A notable recent example was the last December’s opening of the Jockey Club Museum of Climate Change at The Chinese University of Hong Kong, the city’s first-ever museum focused on this topic.

This year’s Green Action Programme included such initiatives as environmental workshops, eco-tours, low-carbon menus and collections of used items, all aimed at instilling green messages into Club staff.  Besides the open-air film shows, today’s Green Movie Night included a wide variety of environmental workshops and fun games, allowing participants to learn more about green living in a carnival atmosphere.
