02/27/2014

To help people better enjoy the works of world-acclaimed Taiwanese sculptor Ju Ming in his first large-scale solo exhibition in the city, The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust is funding an art appreciation programme encompassing free and fun-filled workshops and guided tours at the Hong Kong Museum of Art (HKMA).

Today (27 February), Permanent Secretary for Home Affairs Raymond Young joined artist Ju Ming, The Chinese University of Hong Kong Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Joseph Sung, Friends of HKMA Nancy Lee, Art Museum Advisory Panel Chairman Vincent Lo, Director of Leisure and Cultural Services Betty Fung Ching, Juming Museum Director Wu Shun-ling and HKMA Chief Curator Eve Tam to officiate at the opening ceremony of "Ju Ming - Sculpting the Living World".

The exhibition, which runs until 15 June, will showcase 120 sets of Living World Series artworks in wood, ceramics, stone, bronze and stainless steel. The human-like sculptures illustrate the evolution of the influential series since its inception in the early 1980s, and reveal the artist's observation and reflection on contemporary life. It is expected to attract around 800,000 visitors to the Tsim Sha Tsui-based Museum and the open space nearby where outdoor artworks are displayed.

Under the Jockey Club Art Appreciation Programme, made possible by the Trust’s HK$400,000 donation, visitors will have the chance to make their own sculptures with straw, wax and sponge. Those with disabilities can also join the art journey through tailor-made activities co-organised by the Jockey Club Arts Accessibility Service Centre and the Museum to enhance their experience of the forms of Ju’s works. Primary school students, meanwhile, may learn about various sculpture techniques in guided tours and sculpt human figures using Ju’s unique approach. An audio guide on highlighted exhibits will be available for art lovers to enjoy the show at their own pace.

In addition to the Art Appreciation Programme, the Trust has funded The Hong Kong Jockey Club Series: Legends of the Giant Dinosaurs andwill supportThe Hong Kong Jockey Club Series: Studio Ghibli Layout Designs: Understanding the Secrets of Takahata and Mizayaki Animation in 2013-14, as part of the annual HK$17 million donation for exhibitions and related educational activities in the three-year partnership between the Trust and the Leisure and Cultural Services Department launched in 2012.
