02/27/2014

The Open University of Hong Kong (OUHK) today (27 February) marked its 25th anniversary with the official opening of Jubilee College, located on a newly-created Jockey Club Campus in Ho Man Tin. Partly-funded by a HK$190 million donation from the Club’s Charities Trust, the 12-storey college building offers state-of-the-art facilities for OUHK’s 2,400 full-time students.

Club Chairman T. Brian Stevenson was joined by HKSAR Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying, Secretary for Education Eddie Ng, OUHK Pro-Chancellor Dr Charles Lee, Council Chairman Dr Eddy Fong, President Professor John Leong in today’s opening ceremony.

Mr Stevenson said, “The Club cherishes its long association with the Open University that dates from 1993 when we helped build and equip of the original campus in Homantin. With the establishment of this Jubilee College, the University will be able to broaden its scope of teaching and support the development of three of the six priority industries as promulgated by the Government – Cultural and Creative Industries, Testing and Certification Services and Medical Services.  It is expected that in the first ten years, degree-education will be provided to about 8,000 students.”

Located on Chung Hau Street in Ho Man Tin, the building boasts an energy-saving green design and contains the Jockey Club Auditorium, lecture halls and creative arts studios equipped with the latest facilities.

During their 20-year partnership, the Club’s Charities Trust has donated more than HK$360 million to support the University’s campus development and enhancement of teaching facilities.

Supplementing the latest donation, the Trust has provided HK$10.7 million to launch a five-year Community Healthcare Education Programme designed to help meet the community need for more nurses and healthcare workers to serve our ageing population.  Since last September, the University has organised certificate and diploma programmes for some 1,000 students as well as training courses for about 1,500 carers and volunteers to provide community-based case support to the elderly, patients with chronic diseases and people with mental illness.  The Trust funding also covers 300 Jockey Club Community Healthcare Education Scholarships for needy students.
