Jockey Club project recaptures traditional bazaars in Tai Po and Fanling

01/18/2014

As the main exhibition venue of this year’s HKJC Heritage x Arts x Design Walk (H.A.D. Walk) Project, a specially-built 10,000 square foot bamboo exhibition hall in Lam Tsuen reveals the mysteries and secrets of the cultural heritages of Tai Po and Fanling today (18 January)

Made possible by some HK$4 million donation from the Club’s Charities Trust, the exhibition and many activities and events, featuring the theme of “Our Home, Our Roots”, allow the public to have a better understanding of the community culture and history until 9 March.

Club Steward Michael Lee joined Under Secretary for Home Affairs Florence Hui, Antiquities Advisory Board Chairman Andrew Lam, Tai Po District Council Cheung Hok-ming, North District Council Chairman So Sai-chi, Tai Po Rural Committee Man Chen-fai, Fanling District Rural Committee Chairman Li Kwok-fung, HULU Culture Board of Directors Chairman Dr Ng Chun-hung to officiate at the launch of this year’s project.

Noting that it was the fourth time the Club partnered HULU Culture, Mr Lee said the Club and HULU Culture shared same belief that conservation should include both tangible and intangible elements of heritage.  He also expressed his gratitude for the efforts by HULU Culture and support from residents and local artists, giving the public an even better understanding of Tai Po and Fanling.

To encourage local participation, the organisers sought works from artists within the Tai Po and Fanling communities, and organised a “Too Proud Workshop” for hundreds of tertiary institution students to create art works under the guidance of experienced designers.  Over 200 art works are showcased at Lam Tseun Wishing Square in Tai Po and Luen Wo Market in Fanling.

There will be DIY workshops with expert tuition on how to make lanterns, tea-cakes, home-made jam and pickled food – all with the aim of enhancing the knowledge of local cultures of those taking part.  Seminars will take place covering local dialects; traditional customs in the New Territories; history and development of markets and the infusion of squatters.

In addition, there will be various guided tours to explore heritage in Fanling, rural culture in Tai Po, and Sam Mun Tsai Fishing Village.  Participants will be able to experience special characteristics of the districts first-hand by taking self-guided iTours using an app for smartphones and tablet computers.  For details, please visit http://www.huluhk.org/.

Over the past few years, H.A.D. Walk Project has helped bring to light the unique characteristics of Central & Western District, Sham Shui Po, Kwai Tsing and Tsuen Wan, thus fostering greater understanding of the districts and giving new life to their communities and helping preserve traditional cultures.
