Jockey Club funds citya£į?s largest-ever dinosaurs exhibition - opening Friday (8/11)

11/07/2013

Funded by a HK$13 million donation from The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust, an unprecedented exhibition of dinosaurs is being staged from tomorrow to 9 April 2014 at the Hong Kong Science Museum.  Solely sponsored by the Trust and presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD), The Hong Kong Jockey Club Series: Legends of the Giant Dinosaurs exhibition features more than 100 precious fossils and exhibits, as well as robotic dinosaurs and various education programmes, enabling the public to have a better understanding on the daily life of dinosaurs.

Today (7 November), Club Steward Dr Rita Fan Hsu Lai Tai joined HKSAR Chief Secretary for Administration Carrie Lam, Deputy Director of the Department of Geological Environment of the State Ministry of Land and Resources Tao Qingfa, Director of Leisure and Cultural Services Betty Fung, Hong Kong Science Museum Chief Curator Michael Wong and other guests to officiate at the opening ceremony.

Dr Fan said that in sponsoring the exhibition, the Club put great emphasis on educational elements and provide a transport subsidy scheme for all local schools so that, more students, especially those in remote areas, would be able to enjoy the exhibition.

The five-month exhibition is the third mega show held this year under The Hong Kong Jockey Club Series, and will showcase more than 100 precious fossils and exhibits, including the huge backbone of Ruyangosaurus giganteus, as well as six large robotic dinosaurs being displayed in the piazzas of the Science Museum. The outdoor displays feature two Pterosaurs and a family of three Stegosauruses, but the most spectacular exhibit is a 30-metre-long, 10-metre-high Daxiatitan binglingi that can roar and sway its head and tail. This is the first time that such a gigantic robotic dinosaur is being put on display outdoors in Hong Kong.

Inside the museum, the exhibition employs state-of-the-art technology and is full of fun-filled computer games and interactive exhibits to enable the public to explore the daily life and habits of dinosaurs.  Visitors can witness the age of dinosaurs through large-scale computer animations; children can experience the excavation and repairing of fossils at the fun science experiments classes; and family groups can create their own 4D dinosaur model in a workshop or even spend a night with the dinosaurs in the museum!

The education programmes are linked with the curriculum of primary and secondary schools, and complemented with a teachers’ guide and activity sheets for students.  Moreover, all local schools can apply for the Trust-funded transport subsidy scheme, to allow more students, especially those in remote areas, to enjoy the exhibition.

The Hong Kong Jockey Club Series: Legends of the Giant Dinosaurs is solely sponsored by the Jockey Club, and presented by LCSD in collaboration with 13 museums and institutes from Mainland China and overseas. It is expected to attract over 400,000 visitors over the five-month duration.

The Hong Kong Jockey Club Series is a three-year partnership between the Club’s Charities Trust and the LCSD to support two to three exhibitions each year, with an annual funding of HK$17 million. The two previous exhibitions staged earlier this year were The Wonders of Ancient Mesopotamia and The Splendours of Royal Costume: Qing Court Attire; as well as the Art Appreciation Programme of the Andy Warhol: 15 Minutes Eternal exhibition.
