JC Series: Legends of the Giant Dinosaurs 30m-long robotic dinosaur to come alive in Tsim Sha Tsui East

10/25/2013

The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust is funding the largest exhibition of dinosaurs with a HK$13 million donation. As the sole sponsor, the Jockey Club’s support also covers diversified education programmes and a transport subsidy scheme to enable more students to visit the displays at the Hong Kong Science Museum.  The Hong Kong Jockey Club Series: Legends of the Giant Dinosaurs exhibition, which opens on 8 November, is being staged by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD).

The five-month event running through to 9 April next year will be held in the city, featuring more than 100 precious fossils and exhibits, such as the huge backbone of Ruyangosaurus giganteus. The installation of six large robotic dinosaurs to be put on display in the piazzas of the Hong Kong Science Museum was completed today (25 October). Featured in the outdoor display are two Pterosaurs and a family of three Stegosauruses. The most spectacular outdoor exhibit will be a 30-metre-long, 10-metre-high Daxiatitan binglingi that can roar and sway its head and tail. This is the first time that such a gigantic robotic dinosaur is being put on display outdoors in Hong Kong.

In line with the Jockey Club’s emphasis on educational elements, the exhibition will employ state-of-the-art technology and be full of fun-filled computer games and interactive exhibits to enable the public to explore the daily life and habits of dinosaurs.  Visitors can witness the age of dinosaurs through large-scale computer animations; children can experience the excavation and repairing of fossils at the fun science experiments classes; and family groups can create their own 4D dinosaur model in a workshop or even spend a night with the dinosaurs in the museum.

The education programmes are linked with the curriculum of primary and secondary schools, and complemented with activity sheets for students and a teachers’ guide. In addition, the Trust-funded transport subsidy scheme is designed to allow more students, especially those in remote areas, to enjoy the exhibition, and is available to all local schools to apply.

The Hong Kong Jockey Club Series: Legends of the Giant Dinosaurs is solely sponsored by the Jockey Club, and presented by LCSD in collaboration with 13 museums and institutes from Mainland China and overseas. It is expected to attract over 400,000 visitors over the five-month duration.

The Hong Kong Jockey Club Series is a three-year partnership between the Club’s Charities Trust and the LCSD to support two to three exhibitions each year, with an annual funding of HK$17 million. The two previous exhibitions staged earlier this year were The Wonders of Ancient Mesopotamia and The Splendours of Royal Costume: Qing Court Attire.  The upcoming exhibitions presented in the Series will be the Studio Ghibli Layout Designs exhibition and the Art Appreciation Programme of Ju Ming A Retrospect next year, following the earlier success of Andy Warhol: 15 Minutes Eternal exhibition.
