Jockey Club enables more renal patients to enjoy better quality of life

09/28/2013

Over 200 patients suffering from end-stage kidney disease who require dialysis treatment have benefited from the Enhanced Home Renal Replacement Therapy Programme funded by The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust that provides home – rather than hospital – treatment.  And now the programme run by the Hospital Authority is being extended into a second phase with a Trust donation of HK$25.4 million to enable more patients to have a better quality of life by treating themselves at home.

Today (28 September), Club Steward Dr Eric Li Ka Cheung joined Hospital Authority Chairman Anthony Wu and Permanent Secretary for Food and Health Richard Yuen at the programme’s experience sharing session and Thank the Donor Ceremony.

Speaking at the ceremony, Dr Li congratulated all those involved in the successful first phase of the programme, which had convinced the Trust to fund an additional 100 sets of Nocturnal Home Haemodialysis machines and 100 set of Home Automatic Peritoneal Dialysis machines for its second phase.  He also said that the additional Trust-funded machines will allow more renal patients to receive treatment by themselves at home and improve their quality of life, as well as reduce their financial burden.

Mr Wu expressed his heartfelt thanks for the Trust’s donation over the past three years.  He said that patients who joined the programme had not only gained better quality of life but also enhanced vocational rehabilitation. Meanwhile, 19 healthcare professionals have completed overseas training on home dialysis treatment thanks to Trust funding and implemented the first local home Haemodialysis nurse training progrmme this year, which makes Hong Kong the first city in Asia that can nurture local expertise.

The Enhanced Home Renal Replacement Therapy Programme was launched in 2010 with Trust funding of HK$24.2 million.  In that first phase, a group of medical staff members were trained to teach some 200 patients with end-stage renal failure how to use self-dialysis procedures at home, which helped minimise interruption to their social and work life.  The second phase will benefit over 200 renal patients and their families.  The Trust’s total donation to this programme has enabled the Hospital Authority to acquire 400 sets of Nocturnal Home Haemodialysis machines and home Automatic Peritoneal Dialysis machines.
