Jockey Club funds its community partner to foster more age-friendly society

09/12/2013

In its latest initiative to cater for the ageing population and the needs of the elderly, The Hong Kong Jockey Club’s Charities Trust has provided the Senior Citizen Home Safety Association (SCHSA) with some HK$69 million to renovate and equip their new headquarters in Ho Man Tin.

Today (12 September), Club Steward Anthony W K Chow joined Chief Secretary for Administration Carrie Lam, SCHSA Founder and Chairman Albert Cheng and Chief Executive Officer Irene Leung to officiate at the Opening Ceremony of Senior Citizen Home Safety Association Jockey Club Oi Man Centre.

The renovated three-storey centre comprises the Jockey Club Life Journey Centre, a new 24-hour operating call centre, and the Jockey Club Silver Age Centre.

Mr Chow told the guests that the Club has supported SCHSA since 1999. “We are glad to see many new elements incorporated in the design of this Jockey Club Oi Man Centre, which not only provide diverse activities for the elderly, but also enable young people and the soon-to-be-old to understand more about ageing and help them plan ahead for their life journey, in turn fostering intergenerational support.”

Located on the ground floor, the Jockey Club Life Journey Centre, the first of its kind in Hong Kong, enables the public to experience the process of ageing through multi-media exhibits divided into four zones, namely: ‘Are you ready for the Journey’, ‘The Many Choices in Life’, ‘One-way tunnel’ and ‘Rest In Peace’.  After the ‘journey’, participants are engaged in a group discussion and counselling session to rethink their lifestyle, so as to promote the messages of treasuring your lifetime and respecting the elderly.

The Jockey Club Silver Age Centre located on the top floor serves as a platform for SCHSA to collaborate with community partners, developing initiatives to improve the quality of life of seniors.  It comes equipped with a mini studio, a life story library and a computer learning room.

The new centre can now provide additional services, including courses in continuous learning and volunteer training, as well as organising guided tours and education programmes. It is expected to benefit directly over 100,000 people annually.

Other Trust’s support for SCHSA included its Elder Ring Hotline counselling service, the renovation of the Jockey Club Personal Emergency Link Service Centre in Kwun Tong, and the hosting of the 1st Asia Pacific eCare and TeleCare Congress in Hong Kong.
