Joyful Jockey Club Mental Health School Project launched

05/23/2013

Funded by a HK$7.17 million donation from The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust and organised by the Joyful (Mental Health) Foundation, the Joyful Jockey Club Mental Health School Project was launched today (23 May).

The Club’s Executive Manager, Charities, Florine Tang joined the Foundation’s Honorary President Simon To and Education Bureau Principal Inspector Kitty Ho at the launch ceremony of the Project at SKH Fung Kei Primary School in Hung Hom.

Ms Tang said it was very important to gain knowledge of mental health when young as prevention was better than cure. “We hope the programme can serve as a platform for teenagers to gain understanding of mood disorders, so as to spread the message of maintaining good mental health to those around them,” she noted.

The three-year Project is aimed at combating social stigmatisation and increasing public understanding of mental health and mood disorders by offering 160 school talks reaching about 48,000 students, some of whom will take part in related drama performances and competitions. Some 450 student ambassadors will be appointed to help lead school-based activities such as visits and community services. In addition, around 2,100 teachers and parents will be invited to attend related workshops.

The Jockey Club has long taken a leading role in promoting public understanding of mental health, including the funding of the Jockey Club Early Psychosis Project to serve local sufferers, as well as JUSTONE, the city’s first one-stop 24-hour service hotline for people recovering from mental illness and their carers.
