First Jockey Club Community Arts Biennale opens

04/15/2013

Funded by a HK$4.27 million donation from The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust and organised by the Hong Kong Youth Arts Foundation (HKYAF), The Hong Kong Jockey Club Community Arts Biennale 2013 was officially opened today (15 April) by the Club's Chief Executive Officer Winfried Engelbrecht-Bresges and HKYAF Founder/Artistic Director Lindsey McAlister at Tuen Mun Park.

Mr Engelbrecht-Bresges noted the Jockey Club had collaborated on a number of HKYAF projects since 1995, including the three-year Point-to-Point Site Specific Art Project, which received tremendous feedback from more than 50,000 visitors and students and laid the groundwork for this first ever Community Arts Biennale.  He said the Club saw the Biennale as the ideal means to groom young people’s interest in arts and culture.

“For the Jockey Club, what makes the Project more meaningful is the engagement of local emerging artists who have joined previous HKYAF or Trust-funded projects, and who have helped the youngsters develop original, creative and engaging art works for this Biennale,” Mr Engelbrecht-Bresges explained.

A total of 24 sets of art work created by 21 local artists and more than 2,000 young people, as well as 4,000 participants who contributed their creativity on site will be exhibited at Tuen Mun Park, Pok Fu Lam Village, Lok Fu Plaza and The Central Oasis Galleries from today to 26 May. Every Saturday and Sunday during the exhibition period, the public will also have the chance to participate in free docent tours, workshops and public forums, so as to learn more about the exhibits, understand the connection between arts and the community, and create their own art work.
