Jockey Club supports AFC U-14 Championship 2014 Qualifiers

04/03/2013

The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust is giving elite young football players in Asia the opportunity to compete in the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) U-14 Championship 2014 Qualifiers to be held soon in Hong Kong. The tournament’s East Zone (Group H) is hosted by The Hong Kong Football Association (HKFA) with support from AFC, while the Trust is the Principal Contributor.

Today (3 April), The Club’s Head of Charities Projects Rhoda Chan, HKFA Vice-Chairman Pui Kwan Kay and Hong Kong U13 Representative Team Head Coach Pau Marti Vicente unveiled details of the competition.

Ms Chan said the Club is committed to the long-term and comprehensive development of local football. The Club’s donations cover not only training for footballers of different age groups and skill levels, but also construction of substantial hardware projects, so as to provide systematic training that is fundamental to local football development.

She hoped Hong Kong’s football teams would achieve good results in the competition. “This tournament provides a golden opportunity for local young footballers to showcase their hard work over the past year. We believe high-level football matches are important for football training, so local athletes can improve their skills while competing with foreign teams, and local football development will benefit in the long-term.”

There will be a total of ten teams participating in the East Region and Hong Kong is in the same group as the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, Japan, Macau and Mongolia. The champion of the group will qualify for the final. The tournament will be held on 11, 12, 14, 16 and 17 April at the Mongkok Stadium. The winner of Group H can directly enter the Championship Finals next year.

The Jockey Club has been a staunch supporter of local football development over the years, including the  reconstruction of the Hong Kong Stadium and the recent Jockey Club Youth Football Development Programme, providing football training to more than 10,000 young people from across the city's 18 districts for three years. The Club also partners Manchester United to run a three-year training programme, the Jockey Club Elite Youth Football Camp, and Kitchee on the construction of the Jockey Club Kitchee Centre in Shek Mun.
