Club Chairman participates in Remembrance Day ceremony

11/12/2012

Club Chairman T. Brian Stevenson participated in the annual Remembrance Day Ceremony held on Sunday 11 November, the 94th anniversary of the end of World War I, at the Cenotaph in Statue Square, Central, to salute the fallen during the two World Wars.

After the solemn two minutes' silence and bugle call, Mr Stevenson and other representatives laid wreaths to honour servicemen, servicewomen and civilians who gave their lives during or as a result of the two World Wars. Other participants included Government officials, Executive and Legislative Councillors, judges, consular representatives in Hong Kong, District Council representatives, uniformed organisations, community organisations, veterans and members of ex-servicemen's associations.

Remembrance Sunday services are held in many countries worldwide at 11:00 am on the Sunday nearest to 11 November, as this was the hour and date when World War I hostilities ceased in 1918.  This year the nearest Sunday fell on the exact date.  The traditional two minutes' silence was first observed in the United Kingdom in 1919 and in Hong Kong in 1923.
