Jockey Club helps cultivate positive development among pre-school children

10/06/2012

The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust is providing HK$2.8 million funding for a two-year pilot project to develop positive life attitudes among pre-school children living in Kwun Tong, Kwai Tsing, Yuen Long, Tuen Mun and North District.  Organised by the Whole Person Education Foundation, the ICAN Whole Person Education Pre-school Project will provide guidance to kindergarten teachers and parents on mental health issues to help them coach their children towards positive personal development.

Speaking at the launch ceremony today (6 October), Club Steward Dr Rita Fan Hsu Lai Tai explained that “ICAN means I can do it, which emphasises the importance of self-reflection. I think children and adults alike need this ability to maintain a positive and healthy mental state.”

The pilot project for pre-school children is based on the ICAN model that, since 2002, has been used in more than 170 primary and secondary schools in Hong Kong, benefiting more than 100,000 students, teachers and parents.  Similar programmes are offered in Macau and Shenzhen. ICAN stands for Insights, Confirmation, Abilities and Nurture, which help people develop a positive belief and strengthen their ability to face challenges.

The pre-school project team will develop different sets of educational materials tailor-made for use in kindergartens.  Training will be provided to teachers and parents enabling them to apply the ICAN model in school and at home, to help children develop a positive personality and learning attitude, as well as good habits and interpersonal relationships.  To evaluate the effectiveness of the project, all participants are required to undergo a survey before and after the two-year programme.  Over 15,000 pre-school children, teachers and parents from 80 kindergartens are expected to participate.
