Jockey Club funds major redevelopment of elderly home

09/01/2012

The 40-year-old David Trench Home for the Elderly run by the Tung Wah Group of Hospitals (TWGHs) in Wong Chuk Hang is to be redeveloped into an elderly care complex, funded by a HK$123 million donation from The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust. The new complex will be named TWGHs Jockey Club Sunshine Complex for the Elderly, offering more residential, day care and community support services for frail elders.

Today (1 September), Club Steward Anthony W K Chow joined Chief Secretary for Administration Carrie Lam, Secretary for Labour and Welfare Matthew Cheung and TWGHs Chairman Viola Chan to officiate at the foundation stone laying ceremony for the complex.

Speaking at the ceremony, Mr Chow said, “The Club is honoured to work with TWGHs. The redeveloped complex is expected to provide one-stop, comprehensive, new services to cater the diverse needs of the elderly which will complement the government’s elderly care policy of ‘continuum of care’ and encourage the elders to ‘age in place’.”

Mrs Lam said the redevelopment project came in accordance with the elderly care services development and the needs of the elderly. She also expressed her gratitude for the generous support of The Hong Kong Jockey Club and the Lotteries Fund.

Upon completion in 2014, the nine-storey building will provide 410 residential places, day care, and end-of-life services. It will also be equipped with other medical and rehabilitation services. In addition, the Trust’s donation covered the enhancement projects in the complex including more modernised facilities to meet the changing needs of the elderly.

The Club has been a close partner of TWGHs since 1941, having donated over HK$600 million for over 100 projects.  Recent examples include funding the extension of the TWGHs Jockey Club Rehabilitation Centre to provide more residential places for mentally handicapped people and training rehabilitation personnel; the“i-Run – Hong Kong Jockey Club Special Marathon 2012” to encourage social inclusion; and “Parent-Child Interaction Therapy” in promoting family harmony.
