Jockey Club funds HKSAR anniversary performance setting new Guinness World Record

07/02/2012

About 8,000 young people set a Guinness World Record in body percussion performance at the Hong Kong Coliseum today (2 July). They were taking part in a multimedia production “Our 15 Years – Youth Musical Performance” celebrating the HKSAR anniversary, sponsored by The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust with a HK$4.5 million donation to The Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups (HKFYG), and co-organised with Radio Television Hong Kong (RTHK).

Club Chairman T Brian Stevenson, HKSAR Chief Executive Leung Chun Ying, Deputy Director of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the HKSAR Wang Zhimin, Deputy Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China in the HKSAR, Jiang Yu, Legislative Council President Tsang Yok-sing, Director of Broadcasting Roy Tang and HKFYG Executive Director Dr Rosanna Wong witnessed the record-breaking performance.

Club Chairman T Brian Stevenson announced to the participants that they have successfully completed the attempt to break the current world record of the Largest Body Percussion Ensemble and will submit the results to the Guinness Book of World Records for their verification.

Percussion expert Dr Lung Heung Wing led about 8,000 local students to perform body percussion on “Zhong Guo Ren” and the theme from “Mission Impossible” to set a Guinness Record of the Largest Body Percussion Ensemble by performing for over five minutes. The performance is designed to reflect the heartbeat of young people as they express their aspirations with the wider community of Hong Kong. They also joined musician Chiu Tsang Hei, dancer Andy Wong, and various artistes to sing about and recount major events in the past 15 years.

Today’s event was one of several being staged by the Club to celebrate HKSAR’s 15th Anniversary. The Club is also the sole sponsor of two major exhibitions by LCSD, bringing the famous terracotta warriors and the Secret Garden of Emperor Qianlong to the city. In addition, the Club yesterday staged The Hong Kong Reunification Cup and The 18 Districts Cup at Sha Tin Racecourse, highlighting the way that horse racing brings together all sectors of the Hong Kong community, just as that historic date in 1997 reunited Hong Kong people with their compatriots.
