Jockey Club supports HKU programme for social practitioners as a Force for Good

05/07/2012

The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust is supporting the Faculty of Social Sciences of the University of Hong Kong (HKU) to organise a series of training programmes for NGOs that will help them provide better services to the community and enhance people’s quality of life.

Today (7 May), Club Chairman T Brian Stevenson joined HKU Council Chairman Dr Leong Che-hung and Vice-Chancellor Professor Lap-Chee Tsui to announce the launch of “Excellence and Capacity building for Entrepreneurship & Leadership for the Third Sector” (HKU-HKJC ExCEL3) at the HKU campus.

Mr Stevenson commended HKU for its tremendous efforts in developing the project and offering training programmes for NGOs, many of whom work as the Club’s partners in its role as a force for good. “The ExCEL3 Project seeks to help the leaders and social workers of NGOs face the challenges of the community’s rising expectations of their functions and governance, as well as to help them ensure their sustainability.”

Dr Leong thanked the Club for its long-term support to HKU and described it as the beginning of another meaningful collaboration of the two parties. “With the support from the Jockey Club and the Faculty’s sound track record of excellence in engagement with local and international NGOs, I believe that ExCEL3 will scale another new height,” he said.

Part of the Club-funded HKU Centennial Campus project, ExCEL3 will offer a series of in-depth training programmes, public lectures and workshops for the next five years to help social practitioners enhance their capacity to tackle organisational and global challenges. The programmes are being organised by HKU’s Faculty of Social Sciences with the support of the Business and Law Faculties.

Since 1957, the Trust has donated some HK$1.3 billion towards both software and hardware projects of HKU, including the Jockey Club Student Village 1 and 2, as well as Trust-initiated projects like “CADENZA: A Jockey Club Initiative for Seniors”, “FAMILY: A Jockey Club Initiative for a Harmonious Society” and “READ & WRITE: A Jockey Club Learning Support Network”.
