Jockey Club funds FPA to upgrade sex education for young people

03/13/2012

To further promote healthy attitudes towards sex among the youth, The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust has provided over HK$18 million for the Family Planning Association of Hong Kong (FPA) to renovate and fit out its headquarters in Wan Chai into a “FPA Jockey Club Youth Zone”, and to upgrade its mobile library into the “FPA Jockey Club Teen Bean Mobile Classroom”.

Today (13 March), Club Steward Dr Donald K T Li joined Assistant Director of Health (Family & Elderly Health Services) Dr Shirley Leung, The Hong Kong Institute of Education Acting President Professor Cheng Yin-cheong, FPA Chairperson Lina Yan and Executive Director Dr Susan Fan at the opening ceremony of “FPA Jockey Club Youth Zone”.

Noting that the Club and FPA had been partners in serving the community for more than 60 years, Dr Li said, “I am delighted to see the establishment of the Youth Zone which marks a milestone for FPA in providing more comprehensive youth services.  We hope more young people, parents, professionals from education and social services sectors will fully utilise the facilities and services provided by the Youth Zone.”

The newly-created FPA Jockey Club Youth Zone comprises an Activity & Resource Centre, Interactive Learning Zone and Kids Zone designed to help young people acquire healthy sexual attitudes in an open and relaxing atmosphere. It is expected to serve 26,000 users annually.

The FPA Jockey Club Teen Bean Mobile Classroom is a mobile education unit equipped with multi-media learning devices to help young people understand sexuality as well as providing support for youth workers and parents on sex education.

Since 1952, the Club has donated more than HK$30 million to support various projects launched by FPA, including “The Hong Kong Jockey Club Community Project Grant – Community Level Sex Education Programme”.  The Programme aims to cultivate healthy and positive sexual attitudes among the younger generation through community programmes, outreach, consultation and mobile library services.
