Jockey Club funds wheelchair bank expansion

12/19/2011

To alleviate the shortage of specialised wheelchairs for individuals who have severe physical disabilities in public hospitals in New Territories West, The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust has donated HK$2.23 million to the Hospital Authority (HA) to expand the wheelchair bank at Tuen Mun Hospital, so as to benefit the needy in Tuen Mun, Yuen Long and Tin Shui Wai.

Today (19 December), Jockey Club Steward Dr Donald Li joined SAHK Chairman Prof N K Leung, Castle Peak Hospital Governing Committee Chairman Prof John Leong, Tuen Mun Hospital Governing Council Chairman Paul Yu and HA New Territories West Cluster Chief Executive Dr Albert Lo at the Opening Ceremony of the Jockey Club Special Wheelchair Bank.

Noting that Tuen Mun Hospital is the first public hospital to provide specialised wheelchair services to both adult and paediatric patients, Dr Li said the Club was delighted to fund the expansion of the wheelchair bank to benefit more people.

“After the expansion, the number of specialised wheelchairs at the bank will expand from 29 to more than 100,” Dr Li said. “This will shorten the waiting time for special wheelchairs. And more importantly, it will improve the quality of life and self-care ability of many people with disabilities, thus alleviating the pressure on their carers.”

Supported by a clinical team, including rehabilitation engineers, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, orthotist, doctors and nurses, the Jockey Club Special Wheelchair Bank provides seating clinic service, custom-made accessories and wheelchairs on loan to the patients. It is expected to benefit more than 100 patients with disabilities and their families annually.
