Jockey Club sponsors international congress to enhance services for elderly

06/16/2011

Renowned international experts on modern care for the elderly gather in Hong Kong today (16 June) for a three-day conference exploring how the latest technology can provide unique medical, mental and nursing services for the elderly.  The Asia Pacific eCare and Telecare Congress, organised by The Senior Citizen Home Safety Association (SCHSA), has been made possible by a HK$455,000 donation from The Hong Kong Jockey Club’s Charities Trust.

Jockey Club Steward Dr Donald K T Li joined Hong Kong SAR Acting Chief Executive Henry Tang; SCHSA Chairman Albert Cheng and Chairperson of the Congress Organising Committee Kwok Lit Tung at the Cyberport Conference and Exhibition Centre to officiate at the opening ceremony.

Dr Li noted that the Club shared the same vision as SCHSA, to provide timely services for the elderly in meeting the challenge of the growing ageing population in Hong Kong.  “Over the past decade, the Club has donated more than HK$1 billion to support the elderly projects.  Example includes setting up the Jockey Club Centre for Positive Ageing in 2000, the first integrative dementia care centre in the city,” he added.  “The Club is delighted to sponsor such an important congress with worldwide experts to share knowledge and experience of the supporting services for the elderly.”

The Club has always set a high priority in supporting care for the elderly by providing funding to NGOs to implement the services, and also taking initiative to launch the “CADENZA: A Jockey Club Initiative for Seniors” in 2006; establishing Jockey Club CADENZA Hub to promote primary healthcare in the community.

In addition to the Congress, the Club’s Charities Trust has also supported SCHSA for more than ten years to its counselling Elder Ring Hotline service, as well as the renovation of the Jockey Club Personal Emergency Link Service Centre.

Experts from the UK, Sweden, Australia and Japan will be sharing their experience of eCare and Telecare services and exploring new trends with more than 200 service providers, social workers, IT professionals and students from around the Asia Pacific Region, Hong Kong and China.  The aim is to help professionals develop strategies and manage resources in a more effective way by better application of technology, so as to enhance the overall quality of services for the elderly and alleviate the burden on emergency and medical services.  Further details of the conference are available at www.asiatelecare.org/home.php
