Club riders help Hong Kong achieve a "first" at Asian Games

22/11/2010

The Hong Kong SAR equestrian team claimed a historic bronze medal in the team jumping competition of the Guangzhou 2010 Asian Games today (22 November) - Hong Kong's first-ever equestrian medal at an Asian Games.

The Hong Kong jumping team, all of whom are Club-sponsored riders, defeated five Asian nations or regions to claim the bronze medal, with Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates winning team gold and silver respectively.  The team comprised Patrick Lam, Samantha Lam and Kenneth Cheng, all members of the HKJC Equestrian Team, and Jacqueline Lai, a former member of the Club's Junior Equestrian Team.

Cheng put the team on the way to success by finishing with two clear rounds at the top-class equestrian venues designed and built by the Club in Conghua.  His horse, Jockey Club Can Do, is one of three participating mounts purchased by the Club's Charity Trust, the others being Patrick Lam's horse Jockey Club Tilburg and Samantha Lam’s Jockey Club Crunship

The Club has long been a strong supporter of the city’s equestrian sports development.  After the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, the Club committed a further HK$50 million to establish the HKJC Equestrian Team and Junior Equestrian Team in December 2008.  With funding from the Club, Cheng, Samantha Lam and Patrick Lam were able to train in Europe and get well prepared before the Games.

Expressing his delight with the result, Club CEO Winfried Engelbrecht-Bresges said the Club's investment in the riders was clearly paying off.  ''The team has already brought honour to Hong Kong with its excellent results in last year's 11th National Games, and has now shown that it can compete with the best across Asia,'' he said.  ''We have some very talented young riders in Hong Kong, and I believe we can help them achieve even greater goals in the future.''

The team's success also means that Cheng, Patrick Lam and Lai have been ranked in the top 25 among the 39 riders competing in the Asian Games jumping events, thus ensuring they will progress to the individual jumping competition on 24 November.
