Photo Release - Club's torchbearers carry Asian Games flame in Guangzhou

09/11/2010

There was a strong equestrian atmosphere to the torch relay of the 16th Asian Games in Guangzhou today (9 November), when four representatives of The Hong Kong Jockey Club joined the relay as torchbearers, spurred on by 100 cheerleaders dressed in jockeys' silks.  Club Deputy Chairman Dr Simon Ip, who is also President of the Hong Kong Equestrian Federation, was first to carry the stylishly-designed Asian Games torch, passing it on to Jasmine Lai, a member of the Club's Junior Equestrian Team.  In turn, Lai passed the flame to Club Apprentice Jockeys Derek Leung and Keith Yeung.  The Club’s participation highlights its long-standing commitment to promoting world-class racing and equestrian sport, and its designation as Outstanding Contributor of the Guangzhou 2010 Asian Games Equestrian Events, which recognises the Club's role in designing and building the equestrian venue at Conghua and providing professional support for the events.
