Jockey Club Youth Development Project trains the young to be more confident

26 August 2010

Young people are the future pillars of our society.  It is important for them to acquire knowledge and develop a positive character.  With this in mind, The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust funded the Hong Kong Association of Youth Development (HKAYD) to launch and operate the Jockey Club Youth Development Project for three years.

Today (26 August), Club Chairman Dr John C C Chan joined Hong Kong SAR Chief Executive Donald Tsang, Deputy Director of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government Li Gang, Commander of the People's Liberation Army Hong Kong Garrison Lieutenant General Zhang Shibo and HKAYD Chairman Bunny Chan as officiating guests at the launch ceremony.

Dr Chan noted that the Club had put strong emphasis on youth programmes in its community donations over the years, instigating a number of large-scale projects that fostered young people's all-round development.  This was very much in line with the mission of HKAYD.

"The uniqueness of this project is the involvement from the People's Liberation Army to provide foot drill training for the participants.  It will also include disciplinary, physical and military training, as well as moral and national education to help them fulfil the Other Learning Experiences activities of the new Senior Secondary Curriculum," he said.  "We hope this training will help the participants become more confident and better able to set goals for their future."

Made possible by Club's Charities Trust funding of HK$5.88 million, the three-year project will provide training to the young people aged 11 to 18 during a two-day camp to enhance their self-confidence, sense of responsibility, problem-solving ability and national awareness.  Some 18,000 students are expected to receive training in the first three years.

Over the years, the Club has put considerable efforts into youth development.  In 2005, it proactively initiated "P.A.T.H.S. to Adulthood: A Jockey Club Youth Enhancement Scheme" in collaboration with the Government's Social Welfare Department and Education Bureau.  This scheme, which has received strong support from the local education sector, is aimed at helping junior secondary school students meet the challenges facing them during the difficult years of adolescence.

The Hong Kong Jockey Club

Founded in 1884, The Hong Kong Jockey Club has become one of Hong Kong's best known and respected organisations, providing the public with world-class sporting entertainment as well as being the city's major non-Government community benefactor, now donating more than HK$1 billion a year to charitable and community projects.  It has been a part of Hong Kong through good times and bad, sharing the city's growth and development with its people, and is dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for future generations.
