Club's young rider Jasmine Lai shines in first Youth Olympics

20 August 2010

Talented young rider Jasmine Lai brought glory to Hong Kong today (20 August) in the inaugural Youth Olympic Games in Singapore when she won a silver medal in the equestrian team jumping event.  Lai, a member of the Hong Kong Jockey Club Junior Equestrian Team, also has a strong chance of winning a further medal as she now goes on to compete for the individual awards on 22 and 24 August.

Thirty top young riders from around the world have joined the equestrian competition of the first Youth Olympics, representing six different continents.  Lai competed today as part of an Australasian team comprising riders from Australia, China, Hong Kong SAR, New Zealand and Oman. In the jump off, Lai rode a perfect clear round, helping the team to finish second. The riders had to compete on horses provided by the organiser and were given only just three days before the first contest to familiarise themselves with their mounts, a challenge that required strong riding skills as well as a high level of adaptability and flexibility.

Lai has recently extended her tenure as a member of the Club!|s Junior Equestrian Team, which was established in 2009.  Over the past two years, she and nine other talented teenage riders have undertaken extensive training in Hong Kong and overseas with the Club!|s support.  The scheme underlines the Club!|s commitment to nurturing young talent and developing equestrian sport in Hong Kong.
