Jockey Club Cine Academy fosters film literacy among Hong Kong youth

12 August 2010

Hong Kong's film industry has been seeing a welcome revival recently, with local cinemas now drawing much larger audiences for high-quality movies.  To provide young people with a better understanding of film production and enhance their ability to analyse and appreciate film-making techniques, The Hong Kong Jockey Club has donated HK$5.26 million through its Charities Trust to the Hong Kong International Film Festival Society (HKIFFS) to launch the Jockey Club Cine Academy (JCCA), a three-year film education programme.

The Club's Executive Director, Charities, Douglas So joined HKIFFS Chairman Wilfred Wong, JCCA Ambassador and Hong Kong Film Awards Best Actor Cheung Ka-fai, and young director Heiward Mak at a press conference today (12 August) to announce details of the JCCA and its programmes.

Mr So said the Club was committed to nurturing Hong Kong's creative industry and arts development.  Therefore, it decided to support the development of the local film, arts and cultural sectors by helping HKIFFS launch this series of film education programmes and activities.  "We hope to encourage local young people to learn more about movies from different angles and have rational analysis and discussions, which in turn will develop their cultural sensitivity and film arts literacy," he said.

HKIFFS Chairman Wilfred Wong noted that film was the most accessible medium for self-expression and critical thinking.  In an explosive age of information technology, literacy demanded the understanding of both images and text.  "The JCCA aims to inspire such lifelong learning capabilities and cultural literacy through the creation, understanding and enjoyment of moving images," he commented.

The JCCA, a comprehensive three-year film education programme, is the first of its kind in the city for local educators and students.  With the aims of fostering film literacy and enhancing creativity among Hong Kong youth, the JCCA will allow participants the opportunity to interact with renowned local and international film directors and take part in the annual Hong Kong International Film Festival, where they can showcase their best work to global audiences.  Through the Festival's wide range of activities, such as master classes, face-to-face discussions, festival tours, educators' workshops, a short film competition, a joint universities programme and a youth volunteer programme.  Further details of the programme are available at: www.hkiff.org/jcca.
