Club's Junior Equestrian Team members move a step closer to Youth Olympics

3 May 2010

The Hong Kong Jockey Club has long been supporting the development of equestrian sport, as well as helping talented local equestrian riders to compete in international competitions.  Today (3 May) three members of the Club's Junior Equestrian Team - Jasmine Lai, Taylor Yeung and Kendall Kruger - all produced top-class rounds in the Beijing FEI World Jumping Challenge Category A to strengthen their chances of competing in the first Youth Olympic Games later this year.

The two-day event at Beijing International Equestrian Club was organised by the Chinese Equestrian Association.  After four rounds of competition, Hong Kong team received only 29 penalty points to finish second in the team event, while Lai claimed individual silver with 4 clear rounds.

The performances in this important qualifying competition mean that Lai has successfully obtained Certificates of Capability which make her eligible for selection for the inaugural Youth Olympics, which will be staged in Singapore from 14 to 26 August 2010.

The equestrian events of the Youth Olympics will include team and individual jumping competitions in which a total of 30 young riders aged between 17 and 18 will be selected to represent the six continents of Asia, Australasia, Europe, Africa, North America and South America.  Hong Kong will be vying with other 15 other countries and regions including China, Chinese Taipei, Japan and Malaysia to secure the remaining four places allocated to Asia and Australasia, and each National Olympic Committee will be limited to one rider.  Final selections will be announced by the International Equestrian Federation (FEI) in June.

Another major event taking place later this year is the Guangzhou 2010 Asian Games in November.  The Club is giving its vigorous support to leading local riders, including members of the HKJC Equestrian Team and instructors from the Club's riding schools, to help them gain qualification for the equestrian events.  The Club is responsible for the design and building of the equestrian event venues in Conghua on behalf of the Guangzhou Asian Games Organizing Committee.
