Club welcomes government initiative to enhance standard of local football

11 March 2010

Responding to the report of consultancy study on local football development announced by the Government's Home Affairs Bureau today (11 March), The Hong Kong Jockey Club Chief Executive Officer Winfried Engelbrecht-Bresges commented that as a major sports organisation, the Club had always supported sports development in Hong Kong. Subject to a detailed review of the report and the approval of the Club's Board, the Club would consider the invitation to fund the construction of a football training centre in Tseung Kwan O.

In this regard, the Club sees the need for the Government, the Hong Kong Football Association, local clubs and other major stakeholders to support and arrive at a consensus on the goals, business case and roles for the development of football and the proposed training centre. They will also be expected to sign off the specifications and user requirements for the proposed training facilities and provide the necessary expertise to operate the proposed training centre and its ongoing training and youth development programmes. Before the Club is in a position to consider committing significant resources to the proposed football training centre, it is essential to see that the changes recommended in the report for enhancing football development in Hong Kong have been implemented.
