Nobel Laureate Charles Kao visits Jockey Club Centre for Positive Ageing

18 February 2010

Nobel Laureate for Physics Professor Charles K Kao and his wife Gwen Wong paid a special visit to the Jockey Club Centre for Positive Ageing (JCCPA) at Sha Tin today (18 February) to see the facilities of Hong Kong's first purpose-built centre for the care of elderly people with dementia.  They were accompanied by Chairman of The Hong Kong Jockey Club Dr John C C Chan; Chief Executive Officer Winfried Engelbrecht-Bresges; Executive Director, Charities, Legal & Corporate Secretariat, Douglas So; and Director of the JCCPA Professor Timothy Kwok, who outlined the high-quality care and training the centre provides for patients and their family members.

Dr Chan and Professor Kao have been lifelong friends. The good friends exchanged gifts during the visit, with Professor Kao receiving two pairs of chopsticks carved with his and his wife's names. In return, he gave Dr Chan a booklet about his exhibition "The Lore of a Laureate: A Tribute to Charles Kao". Professor Kao said he still used chopsticks even now that he lives overseas.  "Hong Kong people are very proud of you," Dr Chan said.

Aware of the challenges posed by Hong Kong's ageing population, in 1997, The Hong Kong Jockey Club donated some HK$81 million for the establishment of the JCCPA, which opened in 2000.  It operates under the auspices of the Faculty of Medicine of The Chinese University of Hong Kong, the university of which Professor Kao was Vice-Chancellor from 1987 to 1996.

The JCCPA provides integrated day care services, home-based training and short-term residency for dementia sufferers, as well as support services for their caregivers to help relieve their burden.  The centre has also committed considerable resources to applied research studies on dementia treatment and the effectiveness of different care services.
