13 November 2009

The Hong Kong Jockey Club Stewards have long been committed to serving the community, and their achievements are widely recognised.  Chairman John Chan was conferred with an Honorary Doctorate in Social Science by the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) today (13 November) in recognition of his many contributions to Hong Kong.  In addition, Club Steward Simon Ip received an Honorary Doctor of Law by the City University of Hong Kong on 10 November, acknowledging his significant contributions to education and society welfare.

Mr Chan has also been Chairman of the Council of HKUST and the Advisory Committee on Corruption, as well as an independent non-executive director of Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing.  He currently serves as Chairman of the Council of the Sir Edward Youde Memorial Fund, Chairman of the Employers' Federation of Hong Kong, Chairman of the Court of HKUST, member of the Exchange Fund Advisory Committee, Vice Patron of the Community Chest and a member of the 2009 East Asian Games Planning Committee.  He was awarded the Gold Bauhinia Star (GBS) in 1999.

Steward Simon Ip is a staunch supporter of legal education in Hong Kong and on the Mainland.  A former President of the Law Society of Hong Kong, he now serves as an Honorary Lecturer in the Department of Professional Legal Education of the University of Hong Kong, an Honorary Research Fellow of the Faculty of Law at Tsinghua University and Co-Chairman of the International Advisory Board of the School of Law of the City University of Hong Kong.  Mr Ip is enthusiastic about horse riding and is currently President of Hong Kong Equestrian Federation.  Mr Ip's tireless contribution to society is also reflected in his membership of the Advisory Committee on Post-Service Employment of Civil Servants, the Exchange Fund Advisory Committee and the AIDS Foundation Advisory Board.

Club Honorary Steward Dr Joseph Yam also received a Doctorate in Business Administration (honoris causa) conferred by HKUST today.
