Matthew Chadwick represents the Club in EAG torch relay

29 August 2009

Champion Apprentice with 43 wins, Matthew Chadwick represented The Hong Kong Jockey Club in the 2009 East Asian Games Torch Relay today (29 August) as the sixth torchbearer. Chadwick received the flame from Lam Po Kuen and ran straight to Nathan Road before relaying to student athlete Tang Yik Chun.

Today's relay was one of the celebratory activities of the 100-day countdown to the Games. Sixty five torchbearers completed the relay beginning from Kowloon Park Piazza, covering Tsim Sha Tsui, Victoria Harbour and Wan Chai.

As the Principal Contributor of the 2009 East Asian Games, the Club donated HK$40 million to support three main components: recruitment, training and support for volunteers under The Hong Kong Jockey Club 2009 East Asian Games Volunteer Programme; construction of The Hong Kong Jockey Club International BMX Park in Kwai Chung as competition venue and a catalyst for the long-term development and promotion of the sport at community level; and the provision of 120,000 education tickets for students to enjoy the Games.

The Hong Kong 2009 East Asian Games will be held between 5 to 13 December. More than 3,000 elite athletes from nine East Asian countries and regions will vie for 262 gold medals in 22 sports, the highest number of medals and sports in East Asian Games' history.
