21 August 2009

The 3rd Asia & South Pacific Boccia Championships 2009, supported by The Hong Kong Jockey Club through its Charities Trust as the Principal Contributor, came to a successful close today (21 August) at Kowloon Park Sports Centre.  The Hong Kong Boccia Team delighted home supporters by winning a total of six medals, comprising two gold, one silver and three bronze, to add to the gold and silver medals they collected at the 2008 Beijing Paralympics.  Team member Kwok Chun Hoi also received "The Hong Kong Jockey Club Outstanding Novice Award" for the best debut performance by a local player, while Jeong So Yeong from Korea won the same award in the overseas category.

The 3rd Asia & South Pacific Boccia Championships 2009 was hosted by the Hong Kong Paralympic Committee & Sports Association for the Physically Disabled with timely support of HK$2.14 million funding from the Club's Charities Trust.  It attracted over 80 athletes from 12 teams in the Asia-Pacific region, competing for medals in seven events.  The Championships were sanctioned and designated by the sport's governing body, the Cerebral Palsy International Sports & Recreation Association, as one of the four qualifying competitions for the London Paralympics in 2012.  Malaysia was originally accorded the hosting right of the Championships but pulled out at the last minute, providing Hong Kong with an opportunity to take its place.
