The Hong Kong Jockey Club announced today (17 August) that it would ear-mark an immediate donation of HK$10 million to support the relief Taiwan work for those severely affected by Typhoon Morakot.

Through the Hong Kong Red Cross, the Club will pass the donation, equivalent to more than NT$42 million, to the Taiwan Red Cross to support relief efforts for those seriously affected by flooding and mudslides in the middle, southern and eastern parts of Taiwan.  According to the latest published statistics, the disaster has killed more than 120 people while another 400 are still missing.  Over 20,000 people have been evacuated from their homes and some 4,000 more are being moved to Temporary Location Centres.

The Club has given a helping hand to numerous relief efforts in the past, including emergency donations to help Mainland victims of the snowstorms in February last year and the Sichuan earthquake victims in May 2008.  The Club also made a donation of NT$10 million to support emergency relief when an earthquake caused severe damage in Taiwan in September 1999.
